Goals: Eliminate above-ground utility wiring, preserve and facilitate tree canopy growth, and protect the neighborhood power system from weather-related storm damage.
Method: Remove poles and overhead wiring in Radcliffeborough and move utilities underground. City and Dominion Energy will cover the costs of mainline conversion; individual property owners will be responsible for house-to-mainline wiring.
Benefits:
•
Beautification of cityscape- streets and skyline free from poles and wires
•
Dominion Energy will no longer cut back tree growth from utility lines
•
Potential for more shade- research suggests that tree canopies can help reduce temperatures and lower utility usage/costs
•
Utility lines will not be subject to failure by tree branches downed by wind
•
Installation of decorative streetlights on streets where utility lines go underground
